Bombing Attack On Hong Kong

Fury and havoc on Japanese shipping. These two images, in such close succession, tell us that there were at least two photographers on that mission. From a mission on Hong Kong, 491st Bomb Squadron.

"Pat,

I think this Hong Kong raid was 25 October, 1944 (need to verify the day). Gen Chennault had ordered an all-out assault on Japanese shipping which had taken haven in the harbor to avoid attacks from the Fifth (?) Fleet.  Every 14th Air Force aircraft which could be fueled and armed was ordered to attack the ships in, and the docksnear, Victoria Harbor.
The B-24s of the 308th Bomb Group bombed the docks and godowns. Nearly simultaneously the B-25s of the the 341st Bomb Group, and perhaps some from the Chinese American Composite Wing, bombed ships in the harbor.  Following the bombing the fighter,s which had escorted the bombers, and the B-25s strafed more ships.
Follow up evaluations determined the mission as the most successful ever conducted by the 14th Air Force.

Note the black spots in the upper, left corner of the bottom image. I believe the one on the left to be a P-51 of the 23rd Fighter Group. The spot to its right appears to be trailing smoke and may be an enemy aircraft going down.

The two photographers taking the photosin Wozniak's collection were 'Woz' and the tail gunner on Capt. Flannigan's aircraft. I will try to find my notes to get his name, and to positively identify which one's the tail gunner took.

Looks like you are on track.  I did not even see the possible P-51, etc.  I notice you edited up the image from the Flanagan collection, which does indeed provide some good info.   Let's see where this goes!    pat    RE:Eugene T. Wozniak Collection
