Because he is the only 'Wofford' listed on the 491st Bombardment Squadron roster, he has often been confused with Lt. Carl A Wofford, who was the squadron's first combat casualty. On February 24, 1943, just six days after being assigned to the 491st, 2Lt. Carl Wofford was shot and killed by fire from a Japanese fighter while flying as copilot on the Squadron Commander's aircraft.
