Edward Gable

Edward J. Gable served in China during WWII, he was a member of SACO, the U.S. Naval Group China.  He spent most of his time in northern China, in Gansu Province, Shaanxi Province, and likely Inner Mongolia.

Edward J. Gable, Radioman 2nd Class, served in China during WWII, 1/45-11/45, as a member of SACO (Sino-American Cooperative Organization), the U.S. Naval Group China.  SACO was tasked with information gathering and intelligence, and weather monitoring. Gable spent most of his time in northern China, in Gansu Province, Shaanxi Province, and likely Inner Mongolia, and he at least passed through Ningxia's Yinchuan city. He also visited Calcutta, Kunming, Chungking, Shanba (陕坝镇; Also as Shenpa or Shempa), and Shanghai. He spent at least a bit of time at FRUCHi (Fleet Radio Unit China), 20 miles south of Kunming at Hailing Pu.

Edward J. Gable, 82, died Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at 12:15 a.m. at his home. He was the husband of Helen M. (Witmyer) Gable, with whom he celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary June 10, 2006. Funeral service will be Monday, October 9, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Workinger-Semmel F.H. and Crematorium, Inc., 849 E. Market St., York. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in Mt. Rose Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Ellen E. Good, chaplain at VNA Hospice. Mr. Gable was born August 23, 1924, in York. He was the son of the late Harry "Hap" and Ida S. (Smith) Gable. Mr. Gable was office manager at York Saw & Machine for 25 years and was the former owner/operator of Witmyer's Grocery Store, York, for 10 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of SACO and a graduate of William Penn High School, Class of 1942. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sandy L. Halpin and her husband, Barry of York; a son, Brian K. Gable and his wife, Doris "Sis" of York; four grandchildren, Brent Halpin and his wif,e Angie, Samantha Halpin, Ryan Wilt, and Amanda Gable, all of York; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden Halpin and Katelynn Wilt.
